A well-designed bottle can catch your eye, but the most useful information is usually on the back. Reading a label is less about memorizing every nutrient and more about knowing which questions to ask.

Start with the serving size

Find the serving size before comparing amounts. A serving might contain more than one capsule or a particular measure of powder. The amount listed per serving is not always the amount in one capsule, and the number of servings is not the same as the package count.

Read both ingredient lists

Look at the Supplement Facts panel and the other-ingredient list. The first helps you identify dietary ingredients and their stated amounts. The second can include capsule materials, flavors and other ingredients. Review allergen information as well; a familiar product name does not tell you everything about its contents.

Separate a claim from a guarantee

A nutrient amount is different from a promise about how you will feel. A product name or a phrase on the front label cannot establish your individual need. Dietary supplements do not receive FDA approval for safety and effectiveness before marketing, so an “FDA approved” supplement claim should not be treated as a quality shortcut.

For background on approval claims, see the FDA explanation of what “FDA approved” means.

Make your comparison concrete

It helps to compare two products side by side, rather than moving between several pages from memory. If a detail you need is missing, pause the comparison and ask for it. Clear information should come before a purchase.

Keep the label in context

Your diet, other supplements and medicines all belong in the same conversation. A healthcare professional can help you interpret that bigger picture.
